Training for officers and members scrutinising council safeguarding.

This introductory course, ‘Effective challenge of safeguarding children systems’, helps officers and members to effectively question and challenge child protection systems in their authority.

Designed for non-specialists, attendees will be helped to navigate the complexities of safeguarding, understand where responsibilities lie, identify some of the warning signs to look out for and gain the skills to better assure that safeguarding systems provide robust child protection in their area.

Professor Alexis Jay’s 2014 Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Exploitation in Rotherham illuminated the risks of weak overview and scrutiny of children’s services and safeguarding. 

This workshop will offer a masterclass to councillors and officers providing them with knowledge, skills and questions to ask to ensure, and feel assured, that safeguarding children systems within their area are good.

The training day gives an introduction to:

• The range of safeguarding responsibilities for local councils – all councillors – executive, scrutiny and ward councillors.
• Local safeguarding systems – roles and responsibilities.
• The role of overview and scrutiny.
• Key lines of enquiry and sources of data / evidence to help with reviews.
• The benefits of effective scrutiny and challenge of safeguarding systems.
• The barriers to effective challenge – and suggest possible ways to overcome them.

The development session is based on CfGS’s recent Safeguarding Children publication, and is taken from a wider development programme designed for whole councils.
