The ongoing problems facing the NHS this winter have taken the spotlight temporarily off the pressures local authorities face in providing high quality, affordable social care. Yet the two are linked, with arguments made up and down the country that better, more sustainable funding for social care could alleviate some of the demand on the NHS. With the Minister for Health stating his determination to improve co-ordination between primary and acute health services and social care, it is clear that current structures and arrangements are not as effective in all areas as they could be.
The development of Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships (STPs) and learning from NHS vanguard projects may provide part of the solution but there are challenges in ensuring services are joined up, fully funded and sustainable.
CfGS believes that part of the solution lies in better scrutiny and governance of local arrangements. We are inviting scrutiny officers and councillors, as well as colleagues from the NHS, to join us for a one day summit to hear the latest from national leads and experts, network with colleagues and co-design actions that will help scrutiny make more of an impact in your council. This interactive day will prove to be stimulating and practical and help you navigate the scrutiny challenges ahead.
