Scrutineers are being challenged to improve what they do in the context of ever decreasing resources.  

In this new world of always doing more with less it is vital that scrutiny activities and support services are designed to be as effective as possible for the people that use them. There has been an increased interest in design, agile and digital thinking.  Starting with the Government Digital Service and reaching out across national and local government, these approaches have demonstrated how focussing on what people actually need can also help achieve value for money.

Scrutiny faces many challenges that can be addressed through these new approaches.  How information is provided, engagement undertaken and councillors supported are all areas where design and digital thinking can help you make a difference – and there will be many others. And remember, while websites, apps and social media are all part of the digital picture they are not always the best solutions – digital thinking is about much more than the ‘tech’. 

This course will give you insights into the latest design and digital frameworks, share examples of good practice and give you the chance to reflect on your own practice.  By working through the different stages of design thinking and trying out relevant techniques you will learn how you can develop practical solutions to your own pressing challenges.
