Royal College of Nursing

The client and background

In response to a motion at the RCN Congress in 2019, CfGS was commissioned to undertake an independent governance review. The RCN is the world’s largest nursing membership body, it plays a dual role as a trade union representing its members and as a professional body, carrying out work on nursing standards, education and practice.

What we did and the impact

Reflecting the scope and breadth of the RCN in terms of responsibilities, representation and geography, we created a bespoke review team made up of senior CfGS team members and associates with a range of experience covering health and care, participation and governance.

The reviews assessed the RCN against the critical strategic and cultural components needed for effective decision-making, alongside effective supporting structures and processes. Evidence gathering included conversations with a wide range of members, staff, external advisers, member and staff surveys, desktop research and meeting observations. We also identified relevant, comparable examples of member engagement and involvement.

A comprehensive report, that you can read here, contains a series of findings and recommendations that we believe will help the RCN to continue to further improve and develop its governance. The recommendations were accepted in principle by the RCN Council in April 2020 and they are currently engaging with members to inform implementation.
