Good governance of improvement: making change stick
Every council under pressure to improve has a plan. The harder question is whether the arrangements overseeing it can tell if the plan is working. Improvement boards, assurance panels and scrutiny committees can easily slip into monitoring progress against actions, while the deeper changes in culture, performance and outcomes go untested.
This free online session is a chance to learn together and share experiences of getting oversight of improvement right. We’ll look at how accountability should be shared between members, officers and partners, what good evidence of change looks like when a status rating won’t do, how scrutiny and audit committees can make their most useful contribution, and how to build and sustain a shared commitment to improvement across everyone involved. Participants will be encouraged to bring their own experiences, challenges and lessons to the discussion.
The session is relevant wherever your council sits on its improvement journey, whether that’s following government intervention, an external review or your own decision to change. You’ll come away with practical approaches and questions you can put to work straight away.
Who should attend: councillors, statutory officers, governance and scrutiny practitioners, and others involved in supporting or overseeing improvement.
