Economic development shapes almost every aspect of a place, from the health of town centres and local businesses to regeneration, infrastructure, skills and access to good jobs. Councils commit substantial resources to this agenda, often through complicated partnerships and long-term projects whose benefits may not be visible for years. That makes it a challenging area to scrutinise, and an important one.

The next in our series of free online learning events is a chance to explore and share experiences of how overview and scrutiny can make a real contribution to economic development. We’ll consider the questions scrutiny should be putting to decision-makers, how members can look past headline figures to understand performance and outcomes, and how to offer constructive challenge on major schemes and investment decisions. You’re encouraged to bring your own experiences and lessons to the discussion, so we can learn together.

Whatever your council’s focus, whether that’s regenerating a town centre, supporting business growth, improving employment and skills or delivering a wider growth strategy, we want you to  take away plenty of  practical ideas for making scrutiny count.

Who should attend: councillors, scrutiny officers, governance practitioners, and officers working in economic development and regeneration.
