With local government reorganisation helping to redefine local democracy's relationship with citizens across much of England, this vital event will bring together councillors and officers to discuss the future role of our elected representatives
How is the role of councillors changing? And what will the biggest changes to local government boundaries in a generation mean for the way they work?
As local government reorganisation gathers pace across much of England, there has rarely been a better time to examine the evolving role of councillors.
We’re excited to share news of a free 21st Century Councillor event taking place in Andover on 4 November – giving councillors and officers the chance to discuss how elected members can adapt, lead and thrive in a rapidly changing landscape for local democracy.
Organised by Test Valley Borough Council, in partnership with LGC and Birmingham University’s INLOGOV, the event brings together leading voices from across the sector to explore what modern councillors need to succeed – from connecting communities and shaping places, to scrutinising the work of local administrations.
We’re delighted too that the Centre for Governance and Scrutiny (CfGS) will be part of the day. Mel Stevens, CfGS Chief Executive, will lead a workshop on the vital role of scrutiny and councillors.
Other speakers include Catherine Mangan (INLOGOV) and Sarah Calkin (Editor, LGC), with Jessica Studdert (Chief Executive, New Local) among those leading additional workshops.
The event will run from 10am until 3pm. The venue is just a short walk from the train station and free car parking is available.
Places are free but limited – so book now to avoid disappointment
