The client and background
The Centre for Governance and Scrutiny has been commissioned by the Gambling Commission to work on a project supporting local council scrutiny committees (or equivalent around the UK) to work with system leaders to review the effectiveness of local approaches to understand and tackle gambling harms.
What we did and the impact
CfGS is engaging with councils involved in activity to reduce gambling harms by providing expertise and helping with the design and facilitation of a scrutiny inquiry day.
These scrutiny inquiry days will be co-designed to convene a range of partners to discuss how scrutiny can add value and improve work across addressing the issue of gambling harms in the community. It will also assess the current role of scrutiny in the development of solutions to gambling harms and how this can be improved in the future.
The learning from these events and from further case study research will promote the National Strategy to Reduce Gambling Harms by raising awareness amongst elected councillors, and the findings will be published in guidance that all UK councils will benefit from.
