On 7th September Devon County Council are hosting a scrutiny symposium for members and officers to share ideas and experiences of scrutiny. The event will be one of the first to mark twenty years of scrutiny – Devon having been one of the piloting authorities of the new arrangements in 1998/99.
Devon are bringing together expert speakers, alongside scrutiny members and officers, to think about how overview and scrutiny can take a more meaningful role in policy development, and a positive contribution to decision-making. Topics will include learning from Parliamentary Select Committees, robust scrutiny of health and social care integration, and the need to create a collaborative relationship with Cabinet.
There are still some free spaces left for the conference – if you want to attend please contact Vicky Church at the county council at Victoria.church@devon.gov.uk. It’s a good opportunity to come and speak to fellow scrutineers about the experience, and plenty of the day is set aside to share insights, views and approaches to carrying out the day job. I’ll be blogging about the day shortly afterwards and sharing some of my own thoughts on what’s discussed.
