Post-election learning and support

If you’re at a council that’s just seen the arrival of lots of new members, you might be thinking about getting new councillors up-to-speed on governance and scrutiny matters, wondering how to navigate no overall control… a member of a new opposition… or a new councillor yourself, looking for advice and support. We’re here to help.

Below we’ve listed some resources, events and training opportunities we hope will be helpful…

Free online learning event: Governance without a majority: 27 May, 11 am to 12.45 pm

Last week we saw more councils moving to no overall control  and understanding how to govern without a clear majority is becoming more and more crucial for all councils to consider. If you’re at a council that’s suddenly found yourself in NOC, an old hand at managing it, or thinking about your authority moving to NOC in the future, join us on 27 May. We’ll explore how councils can manage in NOC situations, offering practical insights on how to navigate the different permutations of leadership without a majority. From formal agreements to behind-the-scenes negotiations, we’ll unpack what really happens when no single party is in charge.

Free learning events in the near future

We’re running learning events throughout the year – so keep an eye out for more information about our future events soon. Our next two are likely to be:

  • LGR and devolution: where are we now? What next for scrutiny? (June, date TBC)
  • Scrutiny of partner organisations (July, date TBC)

Scrutiny Essentials and other training opportunities

Our Learning and Development Manager Sarah Fenn calls this course a pick and mix, giving attendees a sample of all the different elements to make effective scrutiny. As a result, it’s ideal for new councillors, or those returning to a council after a hiatus – to refresh or introduce effective scrutiny practice.

We also have courses for Finance Essentials, Questioning Skills, and a range of other options as well. If you’re interested in finding out more, get in touch and we can take you through the options for training.
