In the run up to our annual health scrutiny and assurance conference being held on 18th July at the King’s Fund, I’ve been reflecting on the important role that people with scrutiny and assurance roles can play. Earlier this year, jointly with NHS Clinical Commissioners, we published ‘Governance and Accountability for Integrated Health and Care’. If you missed it at the time, you can read it here: https://www.cfgs.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/NHSCC-governance-and-accountability_web.pdf Reflecting the way local systems are increasingly coming together to deliver integrated approaches to health and social care, the paper is an ‘explainer’ for the NHS and ...
With the publication of the NHS Long Term Plan, an expected Social Care Green Paper and the drive towards integrated services through Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships and Integrated Care Systems, health and care continues to feature as one of the most high profile policy challenges we face as a country. Tackling inequalities and improving population health are key to successfully keeping people healthy and living independently for as long as possible, as well as making sure that people can access effective treatment and support when they need it. Overview and scrutiny and other forms of local assurance have a vital ...

With media attention so often focussed on NHS services, social care doesn’t always get the coverage it deserves. It is clear that no one organisation acting alone can find an easy solution. This is where local council scrutiny can play a valuable role, as delegates at our recent ‘understanding health and social care’ event discussed. I’ve recently contributed some thoughts to the County ...
In July 2015, the NHS England Board agreed on new standards and service specifications for congenital heart disease services and developed a three tier model with split levels of treatment options and responsibilities. The model divides all centres into the following: Specialist Surgical Centres (Level 1) that provide the most highly specialised diagnostics and care including all surgery and most interventional cardiology Specialist Cardiology Centres (Level 2) that provide specialist medical care, but no surgeries or interventional cardiology Local Cardiology Centres (Level 3) that provide initial diagnostics and ongoing monitoring and care, and services run by general paediatricians/cardiologists with a ...
It's that time of year. The clocks have changed, the days are getting shorter, traditional Christmas music enhances our shopping experience...Soon we can expect to start hearing about ‘leaves on the line’ or ‘the wrong kind of snow’ or other circumstances that tend to annually disrupt our lives and which, on the face of it, seem to defeat the best efforts of service providers.Of course, it's important to get these circumstances in perspective, because a late train or congested car journey are not the worst of life challenges in social or global terms. But understanding risks and building ...
